Vera's* Story
Sun, 08/15/2010 - 15:49 — Tehila
Vera is a beautiful 26-year-old Moldovian woman who was brought to Israel through underground women trade 7 years ago. Two years after arriving, a Muslim man fell in love with her and married her. Vera was happy and soon gave birth to their first daughter who is now 4 years old. Sadly, Vera's husband has been in and out of prison for felonies and is now serving a one year term until January 2010. While he was still working, her husband rented a lovely apartment for them in his Arab village but now she has no income to pay the rent. Because she has no legal status in Israel, she cannot hold a job. Just before her husbands prison term, she became pregnant with their son and was referred to us by an Israeli social worker who helps women who were illegally smuggled into Israel. Vera gave birth to Ahmed on April 6th just before Passover. What a delight it was for me, as a Jewish Israeli, to visit this Moldovian woman in an Arab hospital on the Mount of Olives. Her hospital room was packed as her daughter, Muslim mother-in-law, and older traditionally-dressed aunts crowded around the baby. We all rejoiced that the love of God, overflowing in our hearts, is able to transcend cultural and ideological barriers. Be'ad Chaim is helping Vera by supplying her new son Ahmed with baby furniture and baby supplies through our Operation Moses project.
UPDATE: just a few weeks ago Ahmed celebrated his first birthday. His father is back home with the family and his mother is in counseling to gain new life skills to strengthen their young family. Ahmed is a sweet little boy who loves his older sister. When he came into the office we were photographing another little baby and ahmed joined in the fun. Here are a few photos from that shoot...
