You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. Isaiah 25:4

Our God is our refuge and as we serve Him, we become a refuge for those around us, a shelter from the pains of life. The women who come to our centers are often in deep distress—troubled by an unwanted pregnancy, needy, and confused.

I was recently encouraged by a God-divined encounter. On the Eilat boardwalk, many of the refugee women make an income by braiding hair with ribbons. As a gentle, young mother braided my granddaughter’s hair, I shared with her that our Eilat center helps women like her. She yelled with joy: “I know that place, Alison [our counselor] helped me with my baby. She is like a mother to all of us!” This woman, and many of her refugee friends, found acceptance, love and a refuge from their stormy lives through our work. It is a privilege to be God’s shelter for the needy.

Bless you for partnering with us.

LETTER OF GRATITUDE FROM THE MOTHERS FROM ISRAEL’S NORHTERNMOST CITY

In October 2023, hundreds of thousands of Israelis were evacuated from their homes because of missile attacks. During the first four months of the war, Be’ad Chaim provided over five hundred gift cards each month. After that, between January 2024 until now, as some people relocated, we provided over one hundred gift cards a month. Each card is valued at about $100 to purchase baby items. Precious mothers, far from their homes and living in hotel rooms with their entire family, sometimes seven children in a room, were deeply helped by these monthly cards. This is the note that the mothers wrote:

Dearest Lilach Centers [our name for the mothers]: No words in our mouths can suffice to thank you for the huge help that you gave us every single month that we have been in Jerusalem after being evacuated from our homes in Kiryat Shmona. You have shown us much mercy. May God bless you. We are deeply grateful. The mothers of Kiryat Shmona.

VOLUNTEERING AND TREE PLANTING IN THE GARDENS OF LIFE

Because of the summer heat, a group volunteered in the Gardens in the evening, cleaning up and digging holes to plant trees. Several people planted trees in honor of babies who had gone to heaven early because of miscarriage.

Sharing the story of loss, rather than carrying grief, brings relief. It has been said that shared joy doubles the joy and shared pain halves the pain. Planting a tree in memory of a baby who was not held is a sign of life continuing. The new sapling, like a new baby, reminds us that God’s creation is never ending. His mercies never cease.

All are welcome to plant a tree in the Gardens of Life or ask our prayer hostess to plant in your proxy. Beautiful certificates are provided to all who plant. Volunteers are welcome in the Autumn to harvest the olive trees.

AGATHA & BABY BOY SHAI

Agatha came to Israel from India looking for work and a better future. However, on her way to Israel, she was sexually abused and became pregnant. Not knowing that she was pregnant, she found a job and started working as a cleaner. When she informed her sister of her pregnancy, her sister told her: “Our family doesn’t want anything to do with a baby born out of wedlock. Go and get an abortion.” Agatha thought that she had lost everything and decided that she would not lose her baby. Her baby would give her someone to love. She named her new son “Shai” meaning gift. Her social worker also connected her with Be’ad Chaim. Through our Operation Moses Project, we provided her with all her baby’s basic needs. Agatha is a hard worker and after only a month she returned to work as a house cleaner, taking her baby with her. During the missile attacks from Iran, Agatha had to run down three floors of stairs, rushing into a tiny bomb shelter for half an hour with the occupants of twenty-four other apartments. That was the situation for twelve days of bombing. Thank God there were no bombs aimed at Ashkelon, but the fear and stress of running down all those stairs into a crowded bomb shelter weighed heavy on our mothers. Thank you for praying for Agatha and all the mothers and children who suffered from fear and anxiety. The bomb shelter was small, but the shelter of God’s love has room for all.

During the missile attacks, Agatha and her baby shared this tiny bomb shelter with the residents of 24 nearby apartments.

EVA & BABY BOY REFAEL

When she discovered her pregnancy, Eva was married and had three children, including a six-month-old baby. Although her husband works as a delivery truck driver, they struggle financially. She left her job as a teacher’s helper when her last baby was born. Sending her children to daycare would cost her more than she can earn. Eva suffers from panic attacks due to the war.

This has meant that she was unable to leave the house or send the children to school. Eva was very depressed to find herself pregnant again. Thankfully, after speaking with our counselor and learning that we would provide for the needs of her TWO babies—both the infant and the baby still in the womb—she began to feel more positive and chose life. In May, her fourth child, Refael (God is my healer) was born. Eva was particularly grateful to us for the double twin stroller as it enables her to take walks with both of her little ones.

TEAM WORK

Our Haifa counsellor Talia shared this letter with the Be’ad Chaim team:

Hi Talia, I wanted to let you know that the delivery arrived today. It’s hard to describe in words how much this excited me. I received a stroller, car seat, baby bed, bathtub, set of sheets and bumper for the bed and a mattress for the stroller. Every item is a reminder to me that there are good people in the world who don’t know me personally, but choose to help in the most fragile and important moments. This strengthened me a lot and gave me the feeling that I am not alone in this journey. A huge thanks from all my heart for all that you have done, for your thoughtfulness, your care and your huge heart. May you all continue to be a source of light and happiness to many other women, as you have been for me.

Talia encouraged us all with these words:

Today I received this letter from my client. You are all blessed—one person was on the hotline, another one of us was in connection with the pregnant mom, one registered her in the computer system, another one ordered her furniture, another one mailed her gift card, and all of us prayed. What a professional and successful team!

SOPHIE & BABY BOY EL-OR

Sophie came to us when she was desperate for help after finding herself in an unplanned pregnancy. She knew that her parents would throw her out of the house, because they belong to a very strict religious group. She survived by moving in with various friends. The baby’s father didn’t want to take any responsibility for the baby. Yet, after meeting with our counselor and being encouraged by our promise of practical help, Sophie chose life. Last month, Sophie gave birth to her first-born son, El-Or, meaning “God is Light.” Surprisingly, her parents allowed her to return home, and the man she had been dating before her affair came back to her, married her and chose to love this child as his own. They are living with her parents until they can get a place of their own. Sophie is so glad that she discovered Be’ad Chaim and was able to make the right decision and keep her wonderful baby boy. The practical help we gave her made an ENORMOUS difference. She didn’t have any money to buy all the things the baby needed, and knowing she will be receiving a monthly voucher to purchase baby needs became a huge relief.

TALI & BABY GIRL HODAYA

Hodaya celebrated her first birthday several weeks ago with cake, songs and fun. Single mother Tali now has four children, one of whom is autistic. She received a government subsidized apartment, so her rent is very low. She is a deeply grateful, practical mom who wrote this encouraging letter:

To all the staff and donors at Bead Chaim: Firstly, I would like to thank you for helping me with my children. I am a single mother raising my children alone and I was working until the war broke out. After that I was unemployed with a little baby at home. When I turned to you for help you gave me financial support which helped me to get through this hard period in my life. I was able to survive and buy all that I needed for my child.

Now, I am on a course of study which I hope will lead to employment so that I can provide for my family while allowing me to work from home.

Thank you so much for all you have done for me, and for giving me support and understanding when I needed it most.
