While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him. Luke 5:12-13
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Philippians 2:6-8
Even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45
Jesus did not have to touch the leper to heal him. He often healed with a word, yet He touched the leper, who was untouchable by other people, to extend mercy and compassion. Jesus demonstrated that sometimes, without a word - love is expressed by a simple touch, a hug, a hand gently resting on a shoulder. Jesus humbled Himself and took the form of a servant, of a man, emptying Himself of His glory for a season. Jesus became physically involved in the messiness of life by touching the lepers, holding children, guiding the blind, touching Peter’s mother-in-law and so many other examples. He ‘got His hands dirty’ with life. He became a servant who spent His time meeting the needs of other people. As His followers, we follow His example of ‘getting our hands dirty’ by becoming involved in the lives and suffering of those around us. We touch their lives with His love and serve as His hands in this hurting world. I thank God for our compassionate counseling team who extend God’s hands of mercy to the hurting, needy mothers in crisis.
