Sandy’s Devotional

Oct 24, 2022 • By Sandy Shoshani

DEVOTIONAL:

So Moses said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘About midnight I will go throughout Egypt. Every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the female slave, who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well. There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt—worse than there has ever been or ever will be again.  (Exodus 11)

“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. (Zechariah 12:10)

This is what the LORD says: “A cry is heard in Ramah— deep anguish and bitter weeping. Rachel weeps for her children, refusing to be comforted— for her children are gone.” (Jeremiah 31:15/ Matthew 2:18)

In Exodus, Jeremiah and Matthew we read the accounts of the deep anguish of a parent when their first born child dies. In Zechariah, we read that the day will come when the people of Israel will recognize their Messiah and grieve with the pain as one who loses a firstborn. The Word describes this pain as bitter and terrible. Yet, when a woman/man aborts their first child, they are barely and rarely given any opportunity to grieve. Yet, a woman, particularly, is in much pain. Psalm 147:3 : “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”  It is our prayer and goal to facilitate healing and restoration for those who mourn and grieve the loss of a child. Abortion hurts women. Abortion hurts fathers and breaks down families and nations. May God bring restoration to individuals/ families and our nations as we turn to Him for healing.
